The prayer life of the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus is beautiful and unique. We combine the contemplative spirit with our active ministry among the aged, youth, and children. At the center of our day is the Holy Mass, celebrated in the chapel of each of our Homes throughout the world. Surrounding the Sisters from morning until night are our community prayers, rising to God like "burning incense in His sight". The Divine Office provides the hinge upon which our day opens and closes: morning prayer, midday prayer, evening and night prayer.

Sisters praying the Rosary

Without the acknowledgement that Jesus is the center of our lives, our ministry - our work - will cease to bear fruit. Our Sisters have the opportunity for frequent confession, monthly days of prayerful reflection, and yearly retreats. Adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is a vital part of our daily life. We also have daily spiritual reading, examination of conscience, and ample participation in spiritual conferences, workshops, etc. Of great importance each day is our time of meditation, our time to truly savor the message of the gospel, our time alone with God to hold our own personal conversation with Him and to reflect upon the meaning of our special way of life and His goodness in calling us to it!

The word "Carmel" means "garden". Our prayer life provides the rich and fertile soil which enables this garden to grow and thrive. Just as we cannot live without breathing, so the Carmelite Sister D.C.J. cannot live without prayer!
