St. Joseph's Carmelite Home in East Chicago, Indiana Opens Our Hearts and Homes to Children in Crisis From Birth to Age 18

Since giving refuge to one frightened child nearly 100 years ago, the Carmelite sisters have, literally, opened their hearts and homes to children in crisis. Today, Carmelite Home is known for being one of the best residential child care facilities in the State of Indiana. That means our children are successfully integrated back into the community. It’s a triumph everyone should celebrate.

Carmelite Home

Located in a quiet residential neighborhood, Carmelite's grounds and buildings are clean and inviting. Trained caregivers, private and dorm-style bedrooms, dining areas, outdoor and indoor play spaces, full-size gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, and chapel ensure that the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of children from birth to age 18 are met.

A nonprofit for family and child services, we offer comprehensive care with a residential treatment center and emergency shelter—so no child will be homeless. We work diligently to reunite children with their families.

Dear Friends

The Carmelite Home is well into its 102nd year in East Chicago. With this accomplishment that God has so graciously given to our sisters, we can only offer our humble thanks to you, our devoted friends, and pray for your continued interest in the program that we provide for our children.

Peeking in - our sisters and staff are caring for 70 babies, toddlers, elementary-aged boys and girls, and of course, our adolescent girls (including our teen moms and their children). The main goals of Carmelite Home/Holy Innocents Center are to assist our children in dealing with their present life situations and to prepare them for the challenging circumstances that will confront them in the future.

Our Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus have cared for God's little ones for decades - hundreds of children and adolescents have entered our front door on Grasselli Avenue, have attended our many area schools, played in our public parks, swam in the local pools, and prayed in our chapel on Sunday mornings. It was no rare sight to find many of our young ladies hidden in the dark chapel at night pouring out their troubled hearts to Jesus. We have even celebrated marriages in our chapel when our children suddenly grow up and become brides!

Both sunshine and storms have abounded over these many years...but we recognize that the presence of God has made the difference. He steers our boat; we are simply the Carmelite crew under His direction. I wish you many cherished moments of family togetherness; and I thank you for all your labors of love on behalf of our population of nuns and children. May Jesus through Mary reward you "extra specially" for everything!

- Your's In Carmel DCJ Sister Maria Giuseppe, Adm.
