Carmelite Home meets challenge fundraiser grant but help still needed

A 100th anniversary gala for St. Joseph's Carmelite Home and a subsequent challenge from the Foundations of East Chicago has raised more than $300,000 for the home.

Cardinal Francis George appeared at the May 15 gala marking the 100th anniversary of the Carmelite Home.

At that benefit, the Foundations of East Chicago announced for every dollar pledged or donated to the home between May 16 and May 31 it would match up to $50,000.

The $300,000 hit the goal, according to Carmelite Home board member Tom Dabertin.

But because of cutbacks from the state of Indiana, similar fundraisers will still be necessary, he said.

Although a final tally from the challenge wasn't available Monday, Dabertin said.

"Without Cardinal George's appearance this would not have been possible," he said. "Because of him and his kindness and commitment and because of the challenge issued by Foundations of East Chicago so we're extremely pleased as a board and an organization."

Dabertin said the board is moved by the kindness and generosity of donors, but because of the state cutbacks asks that they keep the Carmelite Home in their giving plans.

St. Joseph's Carmelite Home shelters approximately 80 boys and girls who are victims of abuse, violence or abandoned.

St. Joseph's Carmelite Home in East Chicago, Indiana Opens Our Hearts and Homes to Children in Crisis From Birth to Age 18

Since giving refuge to one frightened child nearly 100 years ago, the Carmelite sisters have, literally, opened their hearts and homes to children in crisis. Today, Carmelite Home is known for being one of the best residential child care facilities in the State of Indiana. That means our children are successfully integrated back into the community. It’s a triumph everyone should celebrate.

Carmelite Home

Located in a quiet residential neighborhood, Carmelite's grounds and buildings are clean and inviting. Trained caregivers, private and dorm-style bedrooms, dining areas, outdoor and indoor play spaces, full-size gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, and chapel ensure that the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of children from birth to age 18 are met.

A nonprofit for family and child services, we offer comprehensive care with a residential treatment center and emergency shelter—so no child will be homeless. We work diligently to reunite children with their families.
